What Color is that Leaking Fluid
Know the Signs of a Fluid Leak
How To Know
When you have a fluid leak, it can be difficult to determine what’s leaking. However, the color of the fluid can give you a clue as to what’s going on. Here’s a guide on how to determine what’s leaking based on the fluid color.
Know Your Colors
Red Fluid: Transmission or Power Steering Fluid
Red fluids usually indicate that you’re leaking transmission or power steering fluid. If it’s transmission fluid, it’ll likely be redder than power steering fluid. Check for leaks around your hoses and seals. If you see a leak, put a piece of cardboard or something else underneath your car to catch the drips and take your car to a mechanic as soon as possible.
Brown or Black Fluid: Engine Oil
If you see brown or black fluid, it’s most likely engine oil. Check your oil level and if it’s low, add more oil. If it’s still leaking after adding oil, take your car to a mechanic so they can check for external leaks.
Green Fluid: Coolant
If the fluid is green, it’s probably coolant. Check your vehicle’s radiator and overflow tank to make sure that the coolant levels are where they should be. If they’re low, add more coolant until it reaches the “full” line. If it continues to leak, there might be a problem with your radiator cap or water pump. Take your car to a mechanic to have it checked out.
Clear or Nearly Clear Fluid with A Pink Tinge: Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is usually clear or has a pink tinge to it when new but will turn brown over time. Check your brake fluid level and if it looks low, add more brake fluid until full. If there appears to be a leak in your brakes system, take your car to a mechanic right away as this could be dangerous.
Fluid with A Yellow Tinge and Sweet Smell: Windshield Washer Fluid
This one is fairly self-explanatory – if you see windshield washer fluid leaking, just fill up your reservoir with more windshield washer fluid until full. Easy peasy!
